Heart screenings scheduled

During the month of February, Kootenai Heart Center will be offering low-cost heart screenings Tuesday and Friday mornings by appointment from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Kootenai Heart Center Lobby. Cost for a screening is $15.

“Our goal is to encourage healthier lifestyles that will reduce the cardiovascular disease rate, not just in the elderly but the young as well,” says Joyce Kratz Klatt, supervisor of Kootenai Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation at Kootenai Heart Center.

“If we can instill healthy behavior at a younger age, we may prevent the progression of cardiovascular disease in future generations.”

The confidential Heart to Heart screening consists of a lipid profile, which includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglyceride and glucose levels, blood pressure measurement and body mass index. Kootenai Health staff will review the results of the tests with each participant and refer them to resources that can help with their specific needs.

To register for a Heart to Heart screening, call 666-2083. Cost is $15 for their first screening and $20 if the participant has had a previous Heart to Heart screening. For accurate results, participants should fast by not eating, and drinking only water for 8 to 12 hours prior to the test.

Citizens Academy planned

North Idaho residents interested in learning more about local law enforcement now have the chance to attend a multiagency Citizens Academy this spring.

The free classes are being offered by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department, Coeur d’Alene Police Department and Post Falls Police Department. Students will learn about how the different agencies operate and will be given a background in traffic, patrol and canine duties as well as what local police are doing to combat identity theft and sex crimes.

The eight-week program begins on March 5 with weekly classes from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, with two Saturday classes.

The academy is limited to 40 people, and applications are due on Feb. 15.

Applications are available at the police agency offices and at www.kcsheriff.com, www.postfallspolice.com and www.cdapolice.org.
