Sutton lands win No. 800

Eddie Sutton became just the fourth coach to win 800 games Saturday night as San Francisco came back from a 19-point second-half deficit to beat Pepperdine 85-82 at Malibu in a West Coast Conference game.

Danny Cavic made a 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds left to give the Dons the lead and give the coach the milestone win in his fourth attempt. USF is 6-15, 2-4. Pepperdine is 7-15, 1-5.

Sutton joins Bob Knight, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp and Jim Phlean as the only Division I coaches to win 800, and trails only Knight among active coaches.

(1) Memphis 70, UTEP 64: At Memphis, Tenn., Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 24 points and the Tigers (21-0, 7-0 C-USA) remained the country’s only undefeated team by pulling out a victory over the Miners (13-7, 4-3).

Memphis is enjoying its best start, topping the 20-win start by the 1985-86 squad. They also extended the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 44 in the first of a four-game homestand.

(2) Kansas 72, Colorado 59: At Boulder, Colo., Darnell Jackson scored 18 points and the Jayhawks (21-1, 6-1 Big 12) turned back the Buffaloes (9-12, 1-6).

Brandon Rush added 15 points and Sasha Kaun 12 for Kansas.

(3) Duke 88, Miami 73: At Durham, N.C., DeMarcus Nelson scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half to lead the Blue Devils (19-1, 7-1 ACC) to a win over the Hurricanes (15-6, 2-5).

Greg Paulus had 16 points for Duke, which scored on nine of its first 10 possessions of the second half. Duke faces archrival North Carolina on Wednesday night.

(6) Georgetown 73, Seton Hall 61: At Washington, Jessie Sapp had 17 points and Patrick Ewing Jr. added 16 as the Hoyas (18-2, 8-1 Big East) defeated the Pirates (15-7, 5-4).

(7) Tennessee 76, Mississippi St. 71: At Starkville, Miss., Chris Lofton scored 20 points as the Volunteers (19-2, 6-1 SEC) beat the Bulldogs (14-7, 5-2).

Penn State 85, (8) Michigan State 76: Stanley Pringle scored 19 points and the Nittany Lions went 16 of 20 from the foul line in the closing minutes to upend the Spartans at State College, Pa.

Talor Battle had 17 points and David Jackson added nine as the Nittany Lions scored their first win over a ranked team in two years.

(10) Texas 80, (25) Baylor 72: At Austin, Texas, Damion James came off the bench to score 17 points and grab eight rebounds, and the Longhorns (17-4, 4-2 big 12) beat the Bears (16-4, 4-2).

(15) Xavier 75, La Salle 62: At Cincinnati, C.J. Anderson scored 16 points and the Musketeers (18-4, 6-1 A-10) overcame a sloppy performance to beat the Explorers (8-12, 3-4).

(16) Drake 83, Indiana St. 77: At Terre Haute, Ind., Adam Emmenecker scored a season-high 20 points and the Bulldogs (20-1, 11-0 MVC) defeated the Sycamores (10-11, 5-6).

(17) Marquette 75, Cincinnati 60: At Cincinnati, Lazar Hayward scored 19 points and the Golden Eagles (16-4, 6-3 Big East) defeated the Bearcats (10-12, 5-5).

Connecticut 60, (18) Pittsburgh 53: At Hartford, Conn., A.J. Price scored 21 points and the Huskies (16-5, 6-3 Big East) closed the game on a 9-2 run to defeat the Panthers (17-5, 5-4).

(19) Vanderbilt 78, Auburn 71: At Nashville, Tenn., A.J. Ogilvy scored 19 points and the Commodores (18-3, 3-4 SEC) snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over the Tigers (12-8, 2-5).

Arkansas 80, (20) Florida 61: At Fayetteville, Ark., Sonny Weems scored 17 points and the Razorbacks (16-5, 5-2 SEC) raced to a 25-point halftime lead in a win over the Gators (18-4, 5-2).

Missouri 77, (22) Kansas St. 74: At Columbia, Mo., J.T. Tiller scored a career-high 20 points, including two key free throws with 6 seconds left to help the Tigers (13-9, 3-4) upset the Wildcats (15-5, 6-1 Big 12).

(23) Texas A&M 60, Oklahoma 52: At College Station, Texas, Joseph Jones scored 18 points to lead the Aggies (18-4, 4-3 Big 12) past the Sooners (15-6, 3-3).

South Carolina 80, (24) Mississippi 77: At Oxford, Miss., Dominique Archie scored 20 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5.9 seconds left to lead the Gamecocks (11-10, 2-5 SEC) past the Rebels (16-4, 3-4).
