The Slice

The Spokesman-Review

Not everyone’s older siblings are cool.

Some children’s big brothers or sisters are dorks — at least as determined by the shallow standards of popularity.

I got to thinking about this one recent afternoon on an STA bus. Two of my fellow passengers were brothers heading for Manito Park. They held plastic sleds. The quiet younger boy looked to be about 9. His loud, cringe-inducing brother appeared to be about 13.

Now I’m no expert on what passes for cool these days. But anyone could tell that the older brother would not qualify. He all but gave off visible geek rays.

But you know what? The younger boy didn’t seem to notice. His big brother was taking him sledding and the prospect made him smile.

I hope they had fun.
