Rutgers hands Huskies first loss of season

Epiphanny Prince scored 27 of her career-high 33 points in the second half and No. 7 Rutgers (19-3, 9-1 Big East) handed top-ranked Connecticut (21-1, 8-1) its first loss of the season, 73-71 on Tuesday night in Piscataway, N.J.

Kia Vaughn added 14 points and Matee Ajavon had 13 for Rutgers, which snapped Connecticut’s 34-game regular-season winning streak.

Renee Montgomery scored 24 points and Tina Charles added 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Connecticut. The Huskies, who were the last unbeaten team in Division I basketball, last lost in the regular season to North Carolina on Jan. 15, 2007.

(6) Stanford 96, Santa Clara 74: At Santa Clara, Calif., JJ Hones hit five of her team’s season-best 13 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 20 points and the Cardinal (20-3) beat the Broncos (16-6) .

(17) Oklahoma State 77, (5) Baylor 67: At Stillwater, Okla., Danielle Green scored 16 points and Maria Cordero added 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Cowgirls (18-3, 6-2 Big 12) beat the Bears (20-2, 8-1).

Men

(6) Georgetown 63, South Florida 53: At Washington, DuJuan Summers made 8 of 13 field goals, including 4 of 8 3-pointers, and had nine rebounds to lead the Hoyas (19-2, 9-1) over the Bulls.

(7) Tennessee 104, Florida 82: At Knoxville, Tenn., Chris Lofton made six 3-pointers in scoring 26 points, and the Volunteers (20-2, 7-1 SEC) beat the Gators (18-5, 5-3).

(10) Butler 71, Valparaiso 68: At Valparaiso, Ind., Pete Campbell hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to give the Bulldogs (20-2, 9-2 Horizon League) their first lead and Willie Veazley added a free throw with 7 seconds left as Butler beat the Crusaders (14-8, 5-5).

(15) Drake 73, Illinois State 70: At Normal, Ill., Josh Young scored all but one of his 18 points in the second half, and the Bulldogs (21-1, 12-0 Missouri Valley Conference) rallied to win their 20th straight, beating the Redbirds (16-7, 8-4).

(18) Texas A&M 69, Iowa State 51: At Ames, Iowa, Bryan Davis scored 16 points, Josh Carter added 12 and the Aggies (19-4, 5-3 Big 12) cruised past the Cyclones (13-10, 3-5).

(24) Purdue 67, Penn State 53: At West Lafayette, Ind., Robbie Hummel scored 17 points and E’Twaun Moore added 16 to help the Boilermakers (18-5, 9-1 Big Ten) beat the Nittany Lions (11-11, 3-7).
