Undefeated Tigers wrap up league title

The Spokesman-Review

Favorites all won Tuesday night in Greater Spokane League basketball and completed the 4A playoff picture.

Lewis and Clark clinched its second straight league championship and will be joined by Shadle Park, Mead, University, Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep in next week’s District 8 4A tourney.

The Tigers (18-0) beat the visiting fourth-place Titans (12-6) 56-46 at home, leading practically the entire game.

U-Hi scored first, but by quarter’s end LC led 18-14. The lead was eight points by half and after three quarters.

Point guard Brittany Kennedy was the catalyst for LC. She scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Nine different Tigers scored and Sarah Kliewer had nine rebounds.

Kasey Jurich continued her late-season scoring surge for U-Hi and was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, including 7 for 8 from the free-throw line.

Shadle Park 44, East Valley 40: The visiting Knights are just 4-13, but they continue to play everyone tough in league. This time they hung in with the league’s second-place team, the Highlanders (16-3). Playing tough zone defense in a turnover-filled game, EV outscored Shadle in the second half when Jenni White scored all 14 of her points. But in the end Shadle had too much Lexie Pettersen. The WSU recruit led all scorers with 23 points, more than half of the Highlanders’ total. Shadle finishes up the season on Thursday against North Central with an eye on securing second place and clinching a regional playoff berth.

Mead 50, Rogers 23: The visiting Panthers (15-3) remained a half-game behind Shadle in the race for second place and an automatic regional berth. They outscored the Pirates (0-18) 28-8 in the first half, shutting out Rogers in the second quarter. Eleven Mead players scored, led by Tifa Puletasi’s 10 points. Samantha Roybal of Rogers led all scorers with a dozen points. Mead completes its season against G-Prep on Thursday and at LC on Saturday.

Central Valley 61, Ferris 42: The Bears (11-8) locked up fifth place in league with a 19-8 third quarter run on the road, including 9-for-10 free-throw shooting, that ended the Saxons’ (6-12) playoff hopes. Justine Bowman scored 18 points, while Mallory Flesher and Kelsey Matthews added 11 each. Liz Boyden had 12 points and nine rebounds for Ferris. CV will play rival U-Hi when District 8 4A competition begins on Tuesday.

Gonzaga Prep 63, Mt. Spokane 45: A solid defensive performance and big third quarter lifted the Bullpups (9-10) to a playoff-clinching victory at home. They held the Wildcats (5-13) to 27 points through the third period and scored 20 points in the third quarter to build an 18-point lead. Jenna Sayman scored 14 points to lead G-Prep in scoring and Tia Presley added 13. Averi Hallman scored 13 points and Courtney VanderLinden 12 for Mt. Spokane, which plays EV and NC to determine which two teams qualify for the 3A postseason. G-Prep is the 4A district tournament sixth seed and plays either Shadle or Mead.
