Turnbull seeks auction items

The Friends of Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge organization is looking for items for their benefit auction to be held March 9 at Northern Quest Casino. The auction will raise funds to support environmental education on the refuge. If you have an item you wish to donate, contact Molly Zammit at 487-3358 or Charmaine Gural at 235-2760.

Donations will be tax deductible.

Park invites input on splash pads

Spokane Parks and Recreation will hold three meetings to discuss the projects included in the Parks Improvement Bond, specifically the splash pads.

Those who live in the Northwest, Emerson/Garfield and North Hill neighborhoods are invited to attend the meeting Monday at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the splash pad at Audubon Park. The meeting will be held in the Shadle Library, 2111 W. Wellesley Ave.

Neighbors in the Logan, Minnehaha, Chief Garry Park and Bemiss neighborhoods are invited to attend the meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the splash pad location at Chief Garry Park. The meeting will be held in the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook, in room 310.

Residents of the Lincoln Heights neighborhood are invited to attend a meeting that will discuss the splash pad at Thorton Murphy Park Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be at the Southside Senior Activity and Community Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave.

Over 68 percent of the voters in Spokane approved the $42.9 million bond which will build and develop a variety of aquatics and youth sports projects throughout the city.

Little League opens registration

Registration for the 2008 baseball season for Spokane North Little League and Mead Little League continues through March 1.Cost is $60 for ages 5-6, $90 for ages 7-12 and $100 for ages 13-14.

Families with two or more children playing will receive discounts. This year Spokane North Little League and Mead Little League will be starting up girls fastpitch softball for ages 7-14. Cost will be the same as for baseball. Both leagues also are starting a Challenger Division for ages 5-18 for players that are physically or mentally disabled. Cost for the Challenger Division is $20.

Children ages 5 to 14 who live in District 81 north of the Spokane River can register in Spokane North Little League and those that live in the Mead School District or Orchard Prairie School District can register in the Mead Little League.

Leadership course to be at St. Joseph

The St. Joseph Family Center, 1016 N. Superior St., will offer “Authentic Leadership: Relational Wholeness in the Work Place” on Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through March 18.

The six-week course will discuss developing personal autonomy, emotional maturity, creativity and hope in others to create a supportive and more productive environment.

The cost is $450 per person, $800 for two people or $1,000 for three or more people. The cost includes refreshments and learning materials.

The proceeds benefit the St. Joseph Family Center.

Mead

Hoops benefits cancer fund

Classes from Mt. Spokane High School and Mead High School have organized a benefit basketball game to raise money for the Coaches vs. Cancer fund.

This will be the fourth year that the schools’ staffs have played a benefit basketball game. During the past three years, district students and staff have raised over $8,000 for the Tsunami Relief effort and Coaches vs. Cancer.

The faculties from Mt. Spokane and Mead Middle School will play a game against the faculty members from Mead and Northwood Middle School at Mead High School on Monday, at 7:30 p.m. The cost for admission will be a donation of $5 per student and adult. A raffle will also be held at half time, with proceeds also going to Coaches vs. Cancer. Raffle tickets cost $5 and may be purchased by anyone over 18. The faculties from Mead Middle School and Northwood Middle School will play against each other during the first and third quarters of the game. The faculties from Mt. Spokane and Mead will play during the second and fourth quarters to determine whether the east or west side of the district rules.

Action Sportswear and Printables, a longtime Mead School District supporter, has promised to donate uniforms to the faculty teams. The officials for the game are being donated by the Inland Empire Basketball Officials Association. Raffle prize contributors include the Avista Corp., the Bunch family in memory of Amanda Bunch, Zip Trip Stores, Gonzaga University men’s basketball, Staples and El Sombrero Restaurant. Any other donations, support, or input will be accepted.

Give donations for free pancakes

IHOP is partnering with Young Life, a nonprofit, multidenominational outreach ministry for teenagers, for a free pancake fundraiser Tuesday on National Pancake Day.

IHOP will offer free pancakes all day and instead of paying for your pancakes you can donate any amount of money to support Young Life.

Young Life of the Inland Northwest has a long legacy of impacting kids, with clubs at highs schools and middle schools throughout the entire region reaching over 1,200 kids each week.

Burger sales will benefit Behan

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery will present the eighth annual Burgers With a Heart fundraiser Monday through Feb. 24.

The restaurant will donate 50 cents from each burger sold to the nursery, which offers a safe-haven for children in the community who are at risk of being abused.

There will also be volunteers selling paper hearts to customers.

The goal of the fundraiser is to raise $15,000 for the nursery.

The fundraising effort will be held in the three Red Robins in Spokane, 728 W. Main Ave., 9904 N. Newport Highway, and at 14736 E. Indiana Ave., Spokane Valley.

Project MOVE seeks mentors

Project MOVE (Mentoring Opportunities for Vocation and Education) is looking for mentors in Spokane County.

The program is for disabled youth ages 16 through 21 who are transitioning out of high school. Mentors 18 and older will be matched with these students to help them develop skills that will lead to independence and becoming valuable community members.

Teeth whitener benefits Guilds’

The Spokane Guilds’ School Foundation is presenting its “Smiles Teeth Whitening Fundraiser” through March 31.

For $99, customers can get a white smile, including the customized bleaching trays and starter bleaching gel and the proceeds will benefit the Guilds’ School.

Over the years, the Smiles program has raised over $350,000 for the schools by whitening the teeth of over 3,600 people.

The program is supported by Miller Dental Labs, Patterson Dental Supply, Dr. James Hoppe, Dr. Creigh House, Dr. Jeffrey Marshall, Dr. James Mengert, Dr. Dave Peterson, Dr. Ed Saffer and Dr. Cynthia Thiel.

Barbie party will be at GU

The 10th annual Beyond Pink Barbie Party sponsored by the Northeast Youth Center’s Kids-Helping-Kids Fund will be Feb 16 at 10 a.m. at Gonzaga University, Cataldo Hall, for ages 4-7. Cost is $20 and includes one chaperone.

The pink party brings little ones together to enjoy dancing and singing to Barbie’s CD. All participants are encouraged to wear pink, bring their favorite Barbie doll; dance with the live DJ; visit the nail and facial salon; create crafts and even ride in a limo. Participants will be served pink snacks and pink lemonade to fill their special day.

More than 1,500 children have attended this event over its history. The 2008 goal is to raise $3,000 for scholarships to other children’s programs sponsored by the NEYC. For more information, call 482-0708.

Barbie-style musical for kids

The “High School Musical” Barbie-style, sponsored by the Northeast Youth Center’s Kids-Helping-Kids Fund, will be Feb. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Gonzaga University’s, Cataldo Hall, for ages 8-12.

The program is an outgrowth of the popular “Beyond Pink” Barbie Party, and is for older children who wish to have the opportunity to continue the “Barbie experience.” Cost is $20 and includes one chaperone.

Dress as your favorite Jock or Geek and participate in the play, “Anything I Can Do You Can Do Better;” sing and dance with Barbie and host DJ “What Time Is It?” Fee includes Best Dressed Contest, live D.J. show, salons, studio, limo ride and snacks.
