Shadle holds off NC

You’d have never known it was the Greater Spokane League’s No. 2 team against No. 10 when Shadle Park and North Central squared off Thursday night.

The Indians (4-14) hung with the Highlanders (who finished the regular season 17-3), but couldn’t overcome a second-quarter lapse, losing 47-40 at the Arena.

“We keep giving people good battles,” said Angela Huntley, in her first year as NC’s coach. “But we need a couple of wins.”

NC used a size advantage and tight zone defense to take an early lead. Shadle countered with pressure to score the first 15 points of the second quarter and overcome the 10-4 deficit.

The Highlanders never trailed, but the Indians battled back from a 14-point deficit to trail by five with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“We missed a lot of layins and I don’t know why,” said Shadle coach Chad Dezellem.

NC played three 6-footers including seniors Nicole Graybeal and Stephanie DeGon, who made scoring on penetration difficult. They had 17 points and 19 rebounds. Andrea DePaolo added 10 second-half points including two 3-pointers.

The downside was NC’s inability to handle Shadle’s quicker athletes, who forced 10 second-half turnovers.

Lindsay Niemeier and Bianca Pope hit back-to-back 3-pointers following two miscues for a Shadle lead that ultimately reached 21-10.

Pope also scored seven third-quarter points as the lead stretched to 37-23 before NC rallied to within five points with 17 seconds left.

East Valley 52, Ferris 40: The visiting Knights (5-13) hit 13 of 14 free throws to beat the Saxons (6-13). Kelsi Jacobson scored 19 points.

Mead 60, Gonzaga Prep 33: The Panthers (16-3) won easily over the visiting Bullpups (9-11). Tia Presley and Jenna Sayman had all but seven of G-Prep’s points.

University 60, Rogers 17: Kelsey Mitchell had a season-high 14 points as the Titans (13-6) rolled at home to end the Pirates’ (0-20) season.

Lewis and Clark 69, Central Valley 48: The Tigers (19-0) allowed the host Bears (11-9) just two first-half field goals. Jeneva Anderson had 12 of her 18 points in LC’s 26-13 third quarter.
