Deer Park’s Caccavo wins sled dog race

Frank Caccavo of Deer Park was a winner in the Cascade Quest Sled Dog Race last weekend at Lake Wenatchee near Leavenworth, Wash.

Caccavo won the 75-mile stage race for six-dog teams and received a special award for having the best-kept team in the six-dog category.

Steve Madsen of Cougar, Wash., won the 200-mile Iditarod Qualifier Class for 12- to 16-dog teams and will be heading to Anchorage, Alaska, later this month. The Cascade Quest is the only Iditarod qualifier in Washington.

Baseball

Tiffany Brooks of Spokane has been selected to the Women’s Baseball League NorthStars, the North American all-star team that will compete in the Women’s Baseball Phoenix Cup tournament in Hong Kong this week.

Brooks, a former Gonzaga University club team softball player, is one of four Americans on the NorthStars dominated by Canadian players. She played primarily shortstop and pitcher for the South Florida Crush in 2007.

Brooks, who played baseball until she was 15 and switched to softball, has been invited to the USA Women’s Baseball National Team tryouts for the 2008 World Championships.

College scene

Sophomore basketball players with local ties are Community Colleges of Spokane’s scholar-athletes of the month for January.

Ashlee Michelson, a 5-foot-8 forward from North Central, is the female selection. Michelson, who leads the women’s team in scoring at 14.8 points a game and is second in rebounding, averaging seven a game, has a 3.75-grade-point average.

The male winner is Kyle Turpin, a 6-6 post from Post Falls. Turpin has been a leader on and off the court for the Sasquatch men, who have a 21-1 record and are ranked No. 1 in the NWAACC. He has a 3.2 GPA.

•Gonzaga and Eastern Washington are represented on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 University Division team in women’s basketball.

Jami Bjorklund, a GU junior from University High School who has a 3.95 GPA in business administration, is a first-team selection. EWU junior Sydney Benson from Snohomish, Wash., with a 3.88 GPA as a double major in French and English, is on the second team.

•Two Whitworth players were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 College Division teams in basketball.

Alida Bower, a junior from Onalaska, Wash., was named to the women’s first team with a 3.74 GPA in elementary education. Colin Willemsen, a senior from Moraga, Calif., with a 3.47 GPA in health, fitness and physical education, is on the men’s second team.

•Senior goalkeeper Brynn Bemis of Lake City was named most valuable player on the Washington State soccer team, coach Matt Potter announced. Bemis ranked in the top 10 in four WSU single-season statistics in 2007, including third with 11 wins, and moved into the top five in six career categories.

Other winners: sophomore Kiersten Dallstream, offensive award; senior Allison Scurich, defensive award; sophomore Caitlin Bonney, most improved and iron girl; sophomore Maggie Dougher, strength; freshman Ashley Johnson, rookie; and senior Anna Miller, most inspirational.

Softball

Amanda Krier, an infielder at Lake City High School, has signed to play at North Idaho College, Cardinals coach Don Don Williams announced.

Krier was an Inland Empire League honorable mention her freshman year and was named to the league first team her sophomore and junior years. She was a part of the Lake City team that placed second at state her sophomore year. She also was on the state championship basketball team her junior year.
