Driver jailed after hitting man on road

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A man in his mid-40s suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a car Saturday morning in the 6900 block of North Division in Spokane.

The driver, 28-year-old Daniel J. West, was booked into Spokane County Jail on a count of vehicular assault, police said.

The pedestrian, whose name wasn’t released, was walking in the outside lane of Division when a northbound car hit him about 1:17 a.m., the Spokane Police Department said.

The man might have been in the street because of snow and ice on sidewalks, police said.

“It does appear that alcohol was a factor in the collision, but the investigation is still ongoing at this time,” Officer Teresa Fuller said in a news release.

Police said impassible sidewalks have forced pedestrians into the roads.

“Pedestrians need to wear highly visible clothing, especially during evening hours,” Fuller said.

“Drivers should also take extra care to watch out for people that may be forced to walk in the roadway due to the snowy conditions in our area.”
