The North Idaho Cardinals rolled to their 28th championship in the past 30 years at the Region 18 wrestling tournament at Clackamas College in Oregon City, Ore., on Saturday.
The Cardinals had six individual champions and will send 10 wrestlers to the national tournament Feb. 22-23 in Rochester, Minn.
NIC piled up 152.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Southwestern (117).
NIC’s individual champs were: Nektoe Demison (125-pound class); Kevin Mitchell (133); Chris Harris (141); Tim McGoldrick (149); DJ May (165); and Steve Vasquez (184).
Also headed to the national tourney are Jordan Anderson (157), Dino May (174), Bret Fredericksen (197), and Tim Ofield (285).
The Whitworth Pirates men’s and women’s teams have commanding leads after the second day of the Northwest Conference Championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Whitworth’s men lead second-place Puget Sound 477.5-394, while the Pirates women lead 11-time defending champion Puget Sound 520-472.
Whitworth’s Samantha Kephart became a four-time event champ when she won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.74 seconds.

Eastern Washington University’s Nicole Luckenbach had a Big Sky Conference automatic qualifying weight-throw toss of 54 feet, 1/2 inches at the McDonald’s Open in Moscow.
