Jim Maley scored 25 points and Garrett Hartung added 22 as Rosalia defeated Tri-Cities Prep 73-50 Thursday in the District 9 1B boys basketball tournament at Walla Walla Community College to earn its first trip to the state tournament since 1981. The Spartans (17-7) and Liberty Christian will play on Saturday for the top two seeds to state. Tri-Cities Prep will play Tekoa-Oakesdale today in a loser-out game. … Also at WWCC, Mark Wilson scored 20 points and Kyle Nash added 10 as Liberty Christian defeated Garfield-Palouse 56-46 to qualify for state. Gavin Burt scored 17 points, Tyson Palmer had 14 and Scott Smith chipped in 12 to lead the Vikings (17-5).

“Brennan Yetter scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter to guide the St. George’s boys to a 72-59 win over Walla Walla Valley Academy in the first round of the 2B Eastern Regional at Mead High School. Henry Butler added 21 points and Jordan Dickson chipped in 19 for the Dragons, who outscored the Knights 42-32 in the second half to put the game away. Walla Walla Valley was led by Andrew Burnett, who tallied 22 points. St. George’s (21-3) advances to play the winner between Asotin and Wellpinit at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Mead with a state berth on the line. The Knights will play the loser between Asotin and Wellpinit in a loser-out game Monday at Mt. Spokane.

Spencer Swerin scored 19 points and Sandpoint built a big first-half lead and held on to beat host Lakeland 55-51 in an Idaho 4A Region I tournament opener in Rathdrum. Tanner French added 11 points and Gibson chipped in 10 for the Bulldogs (6-14), who outscored the Hawks 16-9 in the second quarter to take a 31-19 lead into the half. Joel Underdahl tallied a team-high 16 points for Lakeland (6-14). Sandpoint advances to play at top-seeded Moscow (6-12) at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Hawks will play the loser of that game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Don Perconti scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Dustin McConnell added 14 points as Clarkston beat Medical Lake 52-42 in a Great Northern League game in Medical Lake. The Bantams led 27-20 at the half. David Ramacus had 18 points and Gardner Torrence added nine points, 10 rebounds and eight steals to lead the Cardinals. Clarkston improved to 12-6 on the season and 10-2 in the league while Medical Lake fell to 7-10 and 3-8.

Bucky Thomas scored 14 points and Seth Patzer added 13 points and six rebounds as host Kootenai defeated Mullan 58-27 in a North Star League game in Harrison. The Warriors outscored the Tigers 23-6 in the second quarter and led 36-12 at halftime. Anthony Henderson tallied a game-high 20 points to lead Mullan. Kootenai improved to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in the league while the Tigers fell to 3-16 and 0-10.

Girls

Alisa Moehrle scored 24 points and collected 15 rebounds to guide Colton to a 44-34 state-qualifying victory over LaCrosse-Washtucna in a District 9 1B tournament game at Walla Walla Community College. The Wildcats (19-3) outscored the Tigercats 17-6 in the second quarter and led 31-14 at the half. Gladys Martinez had a game-high eight points for LaCrosse-Washtucna (14-10). … Also, Alli Winters scored 13 points, Alyssa FitzGerald had 11 and Kelsey Simon added 10 as St. John-Endicott beat Tekoa-Oakesdale 36-27 to qualify for state. The Eagles (13-11) will play Colton Saturday to determine the top two seeds to the state tournament. The Nighthawks (14-9) will play in a loser-out game against Touchet today.

Ariel Jones scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds to lead Medical Lake to a 37-26 win over Clarkston in a Great Northern League game in Medical Lake. The Cardinals outscored the Bantams 16-10 in the second half to put the game out of reach. Kellie McCann-Smith tallied a game-high 18 points for Clarkston. Medical Lake improved to 8-9 overall and 6-5 in the GNL while the Bantams fell to 9-9 and 6-6.
