Fifth-grader’s poster advances to finals

Madeline Dickson, a fifth-grader at the Libby Center-Odyssey School, has been named as a finalist in the Washington Poison Center’s statewide Mr. Yuk Poster Contest.

The contest was open to third-, fourth- and fifth-graders and Dickson’s prize includes $200 for her teacher, Kristy Masteller, to use in the classroom, a $50 savings bond, an Mp3 player, a watch from Sketchers, hair products and other items from stores and supporters of the Washington Poison Center.

Spike, the Gonzaga mascot, presented Dickson with her prizes and the rest of the students at the school received Mr. Yuk stickers, pencils and magnets.

“I taught my little cousin about Mr. Yuk to keep him safe from poisons in his home,” Dickson said in a press release.

Distinguished educators

Spokane Public Schools have announced Distinguished Educator Teams for the first half of the school year.

At Ferris High School, Tom Rye, Erik Powell and Donna Herold received this honor for their work in the Understanding by Design program at the school, which is a framework for planning curriculum based on the ideas of a subject, real-world assessment and long term understanding.

The three have presented information at the national Understanding by Design center and travel to schools around the country as consultants and trainers.

At Regal Elementary School, Jaki Shrauger, Donna Swanson, Gigi Lemmon, Jane McIver and DeAnna Kornatowski were honored for their work on the first-grade instructional team.

The group collaborates weekly and helps each other come up with ideas to improve the performance of first-graders at the school
