Dawgs swarm, frustrate Wildcats

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Venoy Overton scored a career-high 19 points and led a pack of Huskies that swarmed Arizona star freshman Jerryd Bayless into cold shooting as Washington upset the Wildcats 75-66 on Thursday night at Seattle.

Overton had 19 points in his previous six games combined before the freshman point guard erupted for 15 in the second half of this foul-filled game.

Jon Brockman added 15 points and 15 rebounds for Washington, which after beating then-No. 5 UCLA got hammered in a miserable effort at struggling Oregon last week.

For this upset, Washington forced Bayless to miss 12 of 18 shots. Bayless, who last weekend became the first Arizona player to score 30 or more points in three consecutive games, finished with 22.

Jawann McClellan added 19 for Arizona, which is in jeopardy of missing the NCAA tournament after 23 consecutive appearances. It’s the nation’s second-longest streak behind North Carolina’s 27 from 1985-2001.

Washington’s relentless hounding of Bayless included assigning 6-foot-9 Matthew Bryan-Amaning to double-team him 40 feet from the basket. That forced Bayless into three charging fouls in the first half and seven turnovers in all.

Washington sharp-shooter Ryan Appleby hit a pair of 3-pointers in the game to hit 213 for his career, which is one more than Deon Luton had from 1997-2000.

(6) UCLA 84, Oregon St. 49: At Los Angeles, Russell Westbrook scored 17 points, Darren Collison had 14 points and nine assists and the Bruins routed the Beavers to increase their lead in the Pac-10 to one game.

Kevin Love had 11 points and nine rebounds, just missing his 16th double-double for the Bruins, who gained on idle Stanford.

Josh Tarver scored 10 points for Oregon State, which lost its 16th in a row overall and seventh straight to the Bruins.

USC 81, Oregon 75: At Los Angeles, freshman O.J. Mayo bounced back from his worst game of the season to score 18 of his 32 points in the final 8 1/2 minutes, and the Trojans rallied from a 13-point deficit early in the second half to beat the Ducks and snap a two-game skid.

Taj Gibson added 15 points and eight rebounds, freshman Angelo Johnson had 14 points and five assists.

Mayo, who had four points and 10 turnovers in USC’s 56-46 loss to No. 6 UCLA last Sunday, made a 3-pointer with 6:12 remaining to snap a 61-all tie and put the Trojans ahead for good.

Malik Hairston scored 17 points for the Ducks, who lost for the seventh time in 10 games.
