Fowles pushes LSU to 14th straight win

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Sylvia Fowles had 14 points and 10 rebounds Thursday night to help sixth-ranked LSU extend its winning streak to 14 with a 52-48 women’s win over Kentucky at Baton Rouge, La.

Erica White scored 13 points, the last of them on a crucial fast-break layup after she had stolen the ball with the game tied at 48.

LSU (23-3, 12-0 Southeastern Conference) hasn’t lost to Kentucky (13-13, 7-5) since 1995, but the Lady Tigers’ 13th straight victory over the Wildcats was a struggle in the final minutes.

Kentucky, which had trailed by 11 with 8:02 remaining, tied the game at 48 when Sarah Elliott scored inside as she was fouled.

She missed her free throw, but Kentucky grabbed the rebound and tried to set up for the go-ahead score. White broke up a pass and corralled the loose ball before sprinting the length of the floor for the eventual game-winning score.

(2) North Carolina 79, Miami 61: At Coral Gables, Fla., Erlana Larkins scored 18 points to lead the Tar Heels (25-2, 12-0 ACC) over the Hurricanes (9-17, 2-9), extending North Carolina’s winning streak to eight.

(3) Tennessee 85, Alabama 58: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the day she announced that she will make herself eligible for the WNBA after this season, junior Candace Parker scored 19 points to help lead the Lady Vols (24-2, 10-1 SEC) to their 35th straight victory over the Crimson Tide (8-19, 1-11 SEC).

(10) Old Dominion 87, VCU 67: At Richmond, Va., Jasmine Parker scored 16 points and the Monarchs (23-3, 14-0 CAA) beat the Rams (19-6, 9-5).

Men

(10) Xavier 75, Duquesne 48: At Cincinnati, Derrick Brown and C.J. Anderson had double-doubles in a balanced offense, and the Musketeers (23-4, 11-1 A-10) rolled to their ninth straight win in beating the Dukes (16-9, 6-6).

(21) Notre Dame 82, Pittsburgh 70: At South Bend, Ind., Luke Harangody had 23 points and 12 rebounds and the Fighting Irish (20-5, 10-3 Big East) beat the Panthers (19-7, 7-6).
