Islanders beat Lightning

Miroslav Satan snapped a scoreless tie in the third period and Rick DiPietro stopped 31 shots for the New York Islanders, who welcomed back suspended forward Chris Simon and won their sixth straight with a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night at Uniondale, N.Y.

DiPietro was perfect in snapping the Lightning’s 10-game road run of earning at least one point, posting his third shutout of the season and 14th in the NHL. He has allowed 12 goals in the winning streak.

Simon returned from a record 30-game suspension levied by the NHL against him in December for his skate stomp on the back of Pittsburgh’s Jarkko Ruutu’s leg.

Simon took his first shift 2 1/2 minutes into the opening period and heard a few cheers and louder boos when he hit the ice and touched the puck.

Hurricanes 5, Thrashers 3: At Raleigh, N.C., Ray Whitney, Ryan Bayda and Sergei Samsonov scored second-period goals to help Carolina beat Atlanta.

Sharks 3, Flyers 1: Douglas Murray and Milan Michalek scored goals 42 seconds apart early in the third period to lift San Jose to a win over host Philadelphia, snapping a five-game skid.

Penguins 5, Canadiens 4: Evgeni Malkin scored his 35th goal midway through the third period and got his second assist of the game on Sergei Gonchar’s power-play goal moments later to help Pittsburgh beat host Montreal.

Sabres 5, Maple Leafs 1: At Toronto, Ales Kotalik scored two goals to help Buffalo win for the 10th time in 14 games by beating the Maple Leafs.

Blue Jackets 3, Senators 2 (SO): Rick Nash scored in regulation and in a shootout to help Columbus rally to victory over host Ottawa.

Canucks 3, Predators 2 (SO): At Nashville, Tenn., Mason Raymond scored two goals, including one in a shootout, and assisted on another to help Vancouver beat the Predators.

Bruins 5, Panthers 4 (SO): At Sunrise, Fla., Marco Sturm scored the only goal of the shootout after Boston rallied from a late two-goal deficit to beat Florida.

Kings 5, Blues 1: At Los Angeles, Alexander Frolov scored three goals and Patrick O’Sullivan had a goal and four assists in leading the Kings over St. Louis.
