LC goes for three

The Spokesman-Review

At the State 4A girls basketball draw in Renton on Sunday, Lewis and Clark coach Jim Redmon was asked if he thought the tournament was “down” this year.

“Everyone was so used to the level of talent,” he said. “Last year there were 17 Division I kids and we don’t have that many. But a lot of young talent this year has created some pretty good teams.”

The Tigers are a case in point. They graduated some impact players, including two Division I recruits and a third playing in community college. But youngsters like juniors Jeneva Anderson, the team scoring leader at 11.1 points per game, and Sarah Kliewer are part of a 10-deep lineup that includes Oregon State-bound Brittany Kennedy and another stabilizing senior Kelsey Baker in producing a 25-0 season.

The field is wide-open as two-time champion LC sets about chasing a third straight title at 2 p.m. today in a rematch of last year’s opener against Puyallup.

Puyallup brings back two-thirds of its roster, including its leading scorer, but the Vikings graduated their other top-three offensive players.
