Bowman scores 30 for Zags

Heather Bowman scored 30 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs to an 80-71 West Coast Conference women’s basketball victory over the Santa Clara Broncos at Santa Clara, Calif.

Bowman made all 14 of her free-throw attempts – the first Bulldog to make 14 free throws in a single game since Maria Stack had 14 against Central Washington on Feb. 20, 1985.

Her 30 points were two points shy of the Spokane native’s career high.

Courtney Vandersloot had 11 points, four assists and three steals for Gonzaga (21-7, 12-1).

Tracey Walker had a team-high 21 points for Santa Clara (18-10, 7-6), which also got 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists from Jen Gottschalk.

Jami Bjorklund scored all nine of her points in the first half when the Bulldogs raced out to a 38-30 lead.

“Megan Tinnin scored 25 points and Saundra Cariaga scored 13 – including 9 for 9 from the free-throw line – and the Hawaii Rainbows beat the Idaho Vandals 67-54 in Western Athletic Conference play at Cowan Spectrum.

Tanya Smith contributed seven points and 10 rebounds for Hawaii (11-51, 5-8).

Idaho (2-24, 1-13) got 20 points and eight rebounds from Katie Madison while Yinka Olorunnife had 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Tinnin scored 20 of her 25 points in the decisive second half when the Rainbows broke from a 21-21 halftime deadlock to win convincingly.

Track and field

The Idaho Vandals swept third through sixth places in the women’s pentathlon to rank second in the team race after the first day at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships held at the Jackson Indoor Track at Nampa, Idaho.

Sophomore Darcy Collins (Kootenai High School) compiled 3,697 points – 133 more than her previous career best – to claim a third-place finish.

Fellow sophomore Lindsey Goodman scored a career-best 3,552 points for fourth place.

Alice Draser was fifth with 3,485 points while Molly Burt was sixth (3,447).

Hawaii leads the team scoring after a 1-2 finish in the pentathlon.
