No more pet sales on public venues

The Spokesman-Review

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service will be enforcing a new ordinance in unincorporated Spokane County, and the cities of Spokane Valley, Cheney, Millwood and Fairchild Air Force Base.

The new ordinance effective this week will prohibit the sale of animals upon any public property and private property open to the public.

“This new ordinance strongly reflects our intent to end euthanasia of homeless pets in our community,” said Nancy Hill, SCRAPS director, “the local area shelters are overwhelmed by homeless pets needing new homes.

“The animals sold on street corners and at store parking lots are generally not neutered or vaccinated. These pets are creating more and more pets, until they reach a critical mass and end up at the shelters – homeless.”

The penalty for selling animals in public venues is a civil infraction carrying a $76 fine. The second infraction is $114. A third violation within a 12-month period then becomes a criminal misdemeanor and carries a $1,000 fine and/or 90 days in jail.

For more information about the new county ordinance, call SCRAPS at 477-2532 or stop by the shelter at 2521 N. Flora Road.
