‘Landmarks’ brings back fond memories

The Spokesman-Review

While reading Stephanie Pettit’s landmarks article (Your Voice, Jan. 3) I was flooded with memories about that railroad.

I grew up on a little farm on 28th and Cuba during the 1940s and ‘50s and we could hear that train from the time it left the station downtown. It was an uphill climb so it wasn’t going very fast when it crossed 29th Avenue about 100 yards east of Cherry Lane Road. We knew if we hopped on our bikes we could get there before the train. We had a spot where the engine was around the curve and before the caboose was in sight we would hop on the train for a free ride.

It would cross 37th and Havana and start winding around Browne Mountain. There was a high trestle on the side of the mountain so we would jump off before we crossed the trestle because at that point it would gain speed.

Oh, for the memories; would I do it again? I doubt it.
