Scholarships offered for art class

The Spokane Art School is offering 14 scholarships for low-income teens for its Printmaking on Glass class Feb. 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Clay Connection, 714 E. Sprague Ave.

Students ages 13 to 18 can fill out applications for the scholarships, which include the class and lab fees. The deadline to register is Jan. 21 Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

The class will discuss fusing glass and using printmaking techniques on glass.

Carrousel closed for maintenance

Riverfront Park’s 1909 Looff Carrousel is closed for its annual maintenance and restoration. The 100-year-old carousel will reopen Feb. 29, just in time for its centennial anniversary.

The Looff Carrousel is on the National Register of Historic Places and features 54 horses, one giraffe, one tiger, and two Chinese dragon chairs.

North Central plans for centennial

North Central High School alumni are invited to attend a meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the school’s library, 1600 N. Howard St., to plan for the school’s 100th anniversary celebration.

The celebration will begin this spring and continue through the fall of 2008. Committees will be formed to discuss the preservation of North Central memorabilia, art procurement commemorating the celebration, the centennial homecoming football game, an open house and the creation of the North Central Alumni Association.

Youth theater holding auditions

The Christian Youth Theater is holding auditions for “The Little Mermaid,” Friday from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at its studio at 6205 E. Mansfield Ave., Suite A, Spokane Valley.

Children ages 8 to 18 are eligible to audition if they are enrolled in classes at CYT. Students can still register for classes.

Callbacks for the audition will be Saturday. Rehearsals will be Friday evenings and Saturday mornings until the performances held Feb. 22 through March 1 at the Bing Crosby Theatre, 901 W. Sprague Ave.

Quilt show is next weekend

The Winter Delight Quilt Show is scheduled for Jan. 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Jan 20, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Deer Park School District administration building, 428 N. Main St.

The show raises funds for the “Dollars for Scholars” program benefiting students in the area. The guild solicits entries from many quilt groups and will be showing more than 100 quilts.

Learn to skate, play hockey at Ice Palace

Hockey and skate lessons begin Saturday and run for six weeks at the Ice Palace.

Lessons are for ages 4 and up, and adults are encouraged to participate. Parent/tot lessons are available beginning Tuesday.
