Tennessee slips past Ole Miss

Tyler Smith hit a layup with 4.2 seconds to play and No. 8 Tennessee handed No. 16 Mississippi its first loss of the season, 85-83 on Wednesday night in Knoxville, Tenn.

Tyler Smith and JaJuan Smith both had 21 points for Tennessee (13-1).

Chris Warren led the Rebels (13-1) with 24 points, while Eniel Polynice had 20 and Dwayne Curtis finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

(1) North Carolina 93, UNC Asheville 81: Tyler Hansbrough scored 23 points and Wayne Ellington added 19 to lead the top-ranked Tar Heels (16-0) past the Bulldogs (11-4) in Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina completed its first perfect non-conference regular season since 1998.

(2) Memphis 99, East Carolina 58: Freshman Derrick Rose scored 19 points and the Tigers (14-0, 1-0) rolled to a win over the Pirates (6-8, 0-1) in Memphis, Tenn., in the Conference USA opener for both teams.

(9) Duke 74, Temple 64: Taylor King scored 15 points to lead the Blue Devils (12-1) past the Owls (6-7) in Philadelphia.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his 787th win and moved into sixth place on the career list.

(13) Vanderbilt 80, South Carolina 73: Freshman A.J. Ogilvy scored 25 points and the Commodores (16-0, 1-0) showed no signs of slowing down just because it’s time for Southeastern Conference play, beating the Gamecocks (8-7, 0-1) in Nashville, Tenn.

(17) Dayton 92, (22) Rhode Island 83: Brian Roberts scored 23 points and the Flyers (13-1, 1-0) withstood a furious second-half rally by the Rams (14-2, 0-1) in Dayton, Ohio, in a Atlantic 10 opener.

Charlotte 82, (18) Clemson 72: Leemire Goldwire scored 21 points to lead the 49ers (9-5) to an upset victory over the Tigers (12-3) in Clemson, S.C.

(20) Pittsburgh 79, South Florida 66: Sam Young scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, and the Panthers (13-2, 1-1 Big East) beat the Bulls (10-6, 1-2) in Tampa, Fla.

Kentrell Gransberry matched his career high with 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for USF.

(24) Xavier 83, St. Bonaventure 68: B.J. Raymond and C.J. Anderson each scored a career-high 21 points, and the Musketeers (13-3, 1-0) knocked off the Bonnies (6-9, 0-1) in Cincinnati in an Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.

Women

(1) Connecticut 84, (16) West Virginia: Maya Moore scored 25 points and the top-ranked Huskies (14-0, 2-0) continued to roll, winning their Big East home opener over the Mountaineers (11-3, 1-1) in Storrs, Conn.

(6) Oklahoma 67, Iowa State 64: Freshman Danielle Robinson scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Sooners (10-2, 1-0 Big 12) past the Cyclones (11-3, 0-1) in Ames, Iowa.

(8) Baylor 72, Texas Tech 67: Jessica Morrow and Jhasmin Player each scored 19 points and the Bears (13-1, 1-0) beat the Red Raiders (12-3, 0-1) in Lubbock, Texas, in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
