Woman’s arrest involves multiple members of same family
The week of Christmas was a busy one in Liberty Lake, with five arrests and numerous citations and calls for service. Multiple members of the same family were arrested in an incident that began with a car chase and ended with an officer having to draw his gun to make an arrest.
Police received two calls shortly after 7 p.m. Dec. 29 reporting a drunk driver near Mission Avenue and Holl Road, said Police Chief Brian Asmus. Officer Mike Thomas responded and found a car that matched witness descriptions, but the car sped away. Thomas chased the car across town until it turned into a private driveway off Tum Tum Road, then chased the driver on foot as she ran toward a house.
He attempted to arrest the driver, identified as Tara M. Schubach, 27, as she reached the door. Her parents, identified as Franklin O. Schubach, 49, and Leanne M. Schubach, 49, came out of the house and attempted to prevent Thomas from arresting their daughter, Asmus said. “Basically pushing the officer away and trying to drag her into the house as the officer was trying to cuff her,” Asmus said. “There was lots of screaming and yelling going on.”
Two other people came outside and Thomas, who was alone, was forced to draw his gun and order everyone back into the house, Asmus said. The woman and her parents were arrested. Tara Schubach was charged with driving while intoxicated, attempting to elude a police vehicle and resisting/interfering with police. Her parents were both charged with rendering criminal assistance and obstructing justice.
Also that week Ronald G. Owens, 40, of Newman Lake, was arrested for driving with a suspended license and Jamie L. Pierce, 41, of Liberty Lake, was arrested for malicious mischief.
The week also included two citations each for license and plates required, failure to have liability insurance and failure to wear a safety belt. There was also an animal violation, and citations issued for failure to obey traffic control, failure to stop/yield at an intersection, failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to signal.
Calls for service included an assault, a commercial vehicle violation, a domestic violence incident, theft of property, a hit and run accident and a welfare check.
