Scripture and ecology

Country Homes Christian Church will present Linda Schearing, professor of Hebrew scriptures at Gonzaga University, in talks the next two Mondays.

Schearing will discuss “Common Ground: Genesis 2-3 and our Ecosphere” on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 8415 N. Wall St.

She will also speak about “Imagining the Future: Ecology and the Apocalyptic Vision” on Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

‘Called and Gifted’ workshop

St. Francis Xavier and St. Patrick’s parishes will present “The Called and Gifted Workshop” on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and next Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Francis Xavier Auditorium, 544 E. Providence Ave.

The workshop, led by the Rev. Daniel Barnett and Judy Leach, will discuss the church teaching on the laity, the nature of spiritual gifts and how to discern them.

Special service

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will offer the Service of Compline on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Compline is the final service of the day, derived from the practice of praying before bedtime.

Sunday’s service will be chanted and sung by an ensemble of the Cathedral Choir. The church will be open for meditation and self-guided tours from 1 to 4 p.m.

Unity events

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will offer level one qigong classes on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to noon starting next week and continuing through March 4. The cost is $96 for the eight-week session.

The church also will present “The Man From Earth” as part of its Spiritual Cinema series on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Taste of New Orleans

The Veradale United Church of Christ is presenting a taste of New Orleans next Saturday to raise money for a mission trip to New Orleans for ongoing disaster relief work that continues after Hurricane Katrina.

The program begins at 7 p.m. and will include a Dixieland Jazz concert by the Colville High School Jazz Band, a dessert buffet and gift basket raffle.

The church is planning mission trips to New Orleans in February and March. Volunteers will be working on new homes by doing drywall, sanding and painting. For more information about the fundraiser or the mission trips, call the church office at 926-7173. The church is at 611 N. Progress Road.

Financial futures

Valley Assembly of God Church will host a series of Financial Peace University classes beginning Jan. 20. The 13-week program is designed to help families reduce debt and increase savings. The first class begins at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 20 at the church, 15618 E. Broadway Ave. Call 928-5561 to register.
