Outgoing Spokane Valley Mayor Diana Wilhite has been named the Harry E. Nelson Citizen for the Year by the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Wilhite, a Spokane Valley councilwoman, will be honored Jan. 29 at the fifth annual Awards Gala sponsored by Global Credit Union at the Mirabeau Park Hotel Ballroom.

The Chamber will also announce its Awards of Excellence winners. Tickets are $40 each and include a gourmet dinner and dancing to Nu Jack City. “We’re short on speeches and long on fun,” said Chamber CEO Eldonna Shaw.

Permit OK’d for Barker Road Bridge

A key permit was approved Wednesday for a 1 1/2-year project to replace the Barker Road Bridge over the Spokane River.

Hearing Examiner Michael Dempsey granted Spokane Valley a shoreline substantial development permit, subject to a number of conditions intended to prevent environmental damage.

The bridge, built in 1952, will be closed during construction that is expected to start in March and end in September 2009.

Science night will be Jan. 31

Sunrise Elementary School will host its annual Community Science Presenters Night on Jan. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the school, 14603 E. 24th Ave. The night will include between 40 and 50 presenters from the local education and business communities with science displays and presentations.

Children, parents and community members are invited to attend. There will be plenty of hands-on activities and information on careers involving science. Students can get a few ideas for the upcoming Sunrise Science Fair set for Feb. 27 and 28. Call the school at 228-4600 for more information.
