Lady Vols extend reign over South Carolina

Shannon Bobbitt scored 20 points, Candace Parker added 15 and No. 2 Tennessee beat South Carolina 71-48 Sunday in Columbia, S.C. in the Lady Vols’ 35th straight win over the Gamecocks.

Tennessee (14-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) opened SEC play 2-0 for the 11th straight season.

Parker, Tennessee’s junior All-American, showed why. She had the team’s second basket in a 9-0 start and added another bucket and two foul shots as Tennessee broke on top 17-5 with less than nine minutes gone.

Angie Bjorklund (University High) scored 10 points for Tennessee.

Ilona Burgrova led South Carolina (11-6, 0-2) with 16 points and a career-best 13 rebounds.

(3) North Carolina 79, N.C. State 70: Erlana Larkins had 22 points and eight rebounds to help the Tar Heels defeat the Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C.

LaToya Pringle added 16 points and a pair of key second-half baskets for North Carolina (16-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which led almost the entire way but didn’t put the game away until the final seconds.

Shayla Fields had 17 points to lead N.C. State (12-5, 0-2).

(22) Auburn 82, (10) Georgia 52: DeWanna Bonner had 21 points and 13 rebounds and the Tigers (13-4, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over the Bulldogs in Auburn, Ala.

The victory was Auburn’s first over a Top 10 team in five years. The Tigers beat No. 8 Arkansas 64-36 in 2003.

Ashley Houts led Georgia (14-2, 1-1) with 15 points, but she also committed nine turnovers.

Washington 60, Southern California 45: Andrea Plouffe had 16 points and 10 rebounds to help the Huskies beat the Trojans in Seattle.

Heather Oliver scored 11 points to lead USC (10-7, 3-3 Pac-10), which had a two-game winning streak snapped.

After trailing by three, UW (7-10, 2-3) had a 24-5 run over a 14-minute stretch from late in the first half to midway through the second to go ahead 47-31 and breeze to the win.

Plouffe, Emily Florence and Jess McCormack had six points apiece during the run.
