Pepperdine coach quits midseason

Vance Walberg resigned as head coach of the Pepperdine men’s basketball team Thursday.

Walberg, in his second season with the Waves, cited personal and family reasons for his decision. Assistant Eric Bridgeland takes over as interim coach.

The 56-year-old Walberg’s resignation follows Pepperdine’s 92-57 loss on Monday to West Coast Conference opponent Gonzaga. The defeat, the Waves’ sixth in seven games, dropped them to 6-12 overall and 0-2 in conference.

Walberg leaves Pepperdine with a 14-35 record.

The 36-year-old Bridgeland was the Northwest Conference’s coach of the year for the 2003-2004 and 2005-2006 seasons while he was at the University of Puget Sound.

Bull riders start at Arena tonight

There will be plenty of thrills at the Arena this weekend as the Professional Bull Riders “Enterprise” Tour makes a stop.

The event, a stepping stone to the PBR Finals in Las Vegas, features 52 bull riders today and Saturday, beginning at 8 p.m. Each night 26 different cowboys get two rides. Winners are determined Saturday with payoffs for the best first and second rides plus the two-ride total.

The Enterprise Tour is open to all PBR members and the money counts toward the Finals, which takes the Top 25. The top level is the televised “Built Ford Tough” Series, where the top 25 money winners are required to attend.

UW wants taxes for stadium fix

The University of Washington’s Board of Regents has approved the school’s $300 million plan to remodel 88-year-old Husky Stadium.

Interim athletic director Scott Woodward said the university will now ask the state to approve $150 million in public tax revenues for the project during the current legislative session in Olympia.

The approved plan would use King County’s hotel-motel, restaurant and rental-car tax revenues. Money from that tax already is paying for new stadiums for baseball’s Seattle Mariners and the NFL’s Seahawks, plus remaining debt on the now-demolished Kingdome.
