Whitworth wallops Whitman

Colin Willemsen scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Whitworth men’s basketball team to an 85-68 win over Whitman in a Northwest Conference game Tuesday night at Sherwood Center in Walla Walla.

Ryan Symes and Ross Nakamura added 15 points apiece for the Pirates, who have won six straight games.

Whitman stayed in the game by making 17 of their 21 free-throw attempts. Whitworth was 10 of 15 from the line.

David Riley also reached double figures for the Pirates, scoring 10 points to go along with five rebounds.

Chris Faidley scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to guide the Missionaries. Teammate Jordan Wheeler chipped in 13 points.

Whitworth improved to 12-3 on the season and 6-1 in conference play.

The Missionaries dropped to 3-11 and 0-7.

Women

Natalie Orrell put together a game-high 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting and Whitworth used a big second-half scoring run to overpower Whitman 73-65 in an NWC game at Sherwood Center in Walla Walla.

Trailing by five early in the second half, the Pirates went on a 15-2 run to take an eight-point lead with 11 minutes left.

Free-throw shooting proved to be the difference for Whitworth.

The Pirates scored their final 16 points from the free-throw line and were 29 of 36 for the game.

Cassie Snyder had 12 points and Leah Pomante added 10 for Whitworth.

The Missionaries were led by Hilary White’s 13 points.

The Pirates improved to 9-7 on the season and 4-3 in conference play while Whitman fell to 10-6 and 4-3.
