Dinner benefits autism therapy

The Spokesman-Review

The ISAAC Foundation will hold a benefit dinner, “A Taste of Hope” Feb. 8 at the Mukogawa Fort Wright Commons.

The evening will include food, beverages, music and an auction to raise funds for therapy grants for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.

The ISAAC Foundation began after the death of Isaac Dennis Lytle, a three-year-old boy who was diagnosed with autism when he was 18 months old.

Early intervention and therapy helped Isaac, but his parents, Reed and Holly, struggled with the staggering costs of therapy.

The fundraiser is still accepting donations of items to go up on the auction block. To donate, contact Ashley Potter at 459-1646.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; auction begins at 7.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Tables of eight can be purchased for $200 or tables of 10 for $250; both include a complementary bottle of wine.

For more information, call the ISAAC Foundation at 499-1679.

Schools starting ‘Fit for Bloomsday’

Kids have a few more days to sign up for the annual “Fit for Bloomsday” program at local elementary schools, where kids stay after school every week to walk to get in shape for the event. The program, in its 22nd year, is run by volunteers at local schools.

Children interested in signing up must do so at their school by Monday. Schools can visit www.bloomsdayrun.org to get involved. More than 3,000 students are already signed up and that number is expected to double by next week. The program usually includes 80 elementary schools.

Dog House Drive needs donations

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service is asking for assistance with the annual Dog House Drive.

Each year SCRAPS accepts donated new or used (in good repair) dog houses, which it then makes available to pet owners in need.

“Each year at this time, when the mercury starts to drop, SCRAPS receives countless calls to check on the condition of a dog left in his backyard without shelter,” said SCRAPS director Nancy Hill. “We answer each check-on condition call we receive. Sometimes a dog is in a dire situation.”

SCRAPS informs owners that they must provide shelter for dogs left out in cold weather, but there are always owners who don’t have the funds to buy dog houses. Officers then send these owners to SCRAPS to pick-up a dog house.

People who have dog houses to donate are asked to bring them to SCRAPS shelter at 2521 N Flora Road, Spokane Valley. Those in need of dog houses should call 477-2532.
