Huskies hand ASU first home loss

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

There was no doubt Washington coach Lorenzo Romar didn’t like the way his team was playing early against No. 24 Arizona State on Thursday night in Tempe, Ariz.

The clipboard he heaved across the court during a timeout made that clear. After that little display of displeasure, the Huskies settled down to play the tough, rough style Romar likes, and they handed the Sun Devils their first home loss of the season, 72-61.

“He got his point across,” said Jon Brockman, who led Washington with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

The Huskies (12-7, 3-3) beat the Sun Devils (14-4, 4-2) for the 11th consecutive time, the longest such streak in the Pac-10. The young Arizona State team was rattled by Washington’s trademark “in-your-face” defense.

Arizona State shot less than 30 percent most of the game and wound up at 32 percent (17 for 53), including 5 for 24 from 3-point range.

Quincy Pondexter added 12 points and Tim Morris had 11 in the Huskies’ third straight victory.

USC 68, Oregon St. 44: At Corvallis, Ore., O.J. Mayo had 19 points, Davon Jefferson added 18 and the Trojans (12-6, 3-3) spoiled Kevin Mouton’s coaching debut with a win over the Beavers (6-13, 0-7).

Taj Gibson added 14 points and 14 rebounds for USC.

Lathan Wallace led Oregon State with 11 points, and was the only Beaver in double figures.

Jefferson was 9 of 12 from the field with seven rebounds and three steals.

(8) UCLA 80, Oregon 75: At Eugene, Ore., freshman Kevin Love returned to his home state and had 26 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Bruins (17-2, 5-1) to a victory over Oregon.

The Ducks (12-7, 3-4) led by as many as seven points in the second half, but the Bruins kept coming back. After Bryce Taylor’s 3-pointer put Oregon ahead 69-64 with 4:38 to play, Russell Westbrook answered with a 3-pointer for UCLA.

Maarty Leunen made two free throws for Oregon before UCLA’s Nikola Dragovic hit a 3-pointer to pull within 71-70, and the Bruins retook the lead on a layup by Westbrook.

Darren Collison made two free throws, extending UCLA’s lead to 74-71 with 1:04 left and the Ducks were unable to catch up.
