The Washington Redskins fired assistants Gregg Williams and Al Saunders on Saturday, promoted Greg Blache to lead the team’s defense and announced that a head coach would likely not be in place for at least another week.

The Redskins also formally announced the hiring of Seattle Seahawks assistant Jim Zorn, who agreed to a three-year deal Friday to lead the offense.

Quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor and Al Saunders’ son, offensive assistant Bob Saunders, also will not return next season, a person familiar with the coaching selection process told the Associated Press. The person also said that most, if not all, of the rest of the coaching staff was expected to remain with the team, lending credence to owner Dan Snyder’s stated desire to maintain a degree of continuity following the resignation of head coach Joe Gibbs on Jan. 8.

Williams met four times with Snyder to discuss the head coaching job, but the owner was more focused on other candidates, including former New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel, current Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Moon to be arraigned for DUI

Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon will enter a plea Feb. 5 on charges of driving under the influence, court officials in Seattle said.

The charges stem from an arrest Dec. 28, when a Medina, Wash., police officer saw Moon’s vehicle on the Highway 520 Bridge at about 2 a.m. and noticed it had an expired registration tab, said Medina police Lt. Dan Yourboski. Moon had a valid Texas driver’s license, but his driving privileges had been revoked in Washington.

The officer arrested the former Seahawks quarterback on suspicion of DUI. He was taken to a Kirkland police station, processed and released.

If Moon enters a guilty plea at his February arraignment, he could be sentenced at that time.

Falcons coach hires Robiskie

New Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith hired four assistants, including receivers coach Terry Robiskie and defensive line coach Ray Hamilton.

Smith also hired running backs coach Gerald Brown and offensive quality control coach Glenn Thomas.

Kiffin still wants Oakland job

Lane Kiffin said he hopes to be back as Oakland Raiders coach next season, a day after reports surfaced that owner Al Davis has asked him to resign.

Kiffin was asked after coaching the North team at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., whether he wanted to return a a second season as Oakland’s coach.

“I hope so,” he said.

Kiffin would not comment further on a report by ESPN that Davis drew up a resignation letter for him two weeks ago.
