Creston blanks visiting Braves

Shawn Poohachoff scored the game’s lone goal and Wade Waters stopped 44 shots to give the Creston Thunder Cats a 1-0 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Spokane Braves at Creston, British Columbia.

Cash Ulrich had 32 saves for Spokane (18-23-5). Creston is now 25-17-4.

Women’s basketball

Tanya Smith had 14 points, 25 rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead the University of Hawaii to a 68-53 Western Athletic Conference victory over the Idaho Vandals late Saturday at Honolulu.

Iwona Zagrobelna made 6 of 8 field goals on her way to a team-high 15 points for Hawaii (8-11, 2-4). Megan Tinnin chipped in with 12 points.

Hawaii led 36-23 at halftime, but the Vandals (2-17, 1-6) battled back to within one at 48-47 with 6 minutes and 41 seconds to play before the Warriors pulled away for the victory.

Carli Bakondy led Idaho with 11 points while Alana Curtis added 10.

Track and field

Whitworth sophomore Cody Stelzer cleared six feet, nine inches to win the high jump at the Blue and Orange Classic, hosted by Boise State, at Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday.

It was the second consecutive high jump victory for Stelzer, who set a Whitworth record and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships last week with a jump of 6-103/4.

Also, Whitworth’s Emmanuel Bofa finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.46 while Jeff Kintner was seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 49-21/4.

Elizabeth Mattila was 13th in the 400-meters in 1:02.07. Kristen Dormaier finished 14th in the long jump with a jump of 17-3/4.
