In brief: Judge declares mistrial in case of former Bengal

A judge in Cincinnati has declared a mistrial in the assault case of former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry.

An eight-person jury in Cincinnati told the judge Tuesday they were unable to agree on a verdict. Hamilton County Municipal Judge Richard Bernat then dismissed the jury and set a hearing for July 8.

Eighteen-year-old Gregory Meyer accused Henry of punching him in the face in March. The 25-year-old Henry said he was acting in self-defense.

“The New England Patriots released defensive back Willie Andrews one day after he was arrested for allegedly pointing a handgun at his girlfriend’s head.

The 24-year-old Andrews, primarily a special teams player, was being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Thursday following his second arrest this year.

“Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius had his second knee surgery since January, a procedure that could prevent him from reporting to training camp on time.

“John Pont, who guided Indiana to its only Rose Bowl appearance 40 years ago and also coached at Northwestern, Yale and Miami of Ohio, died Tuesday. He was 80.

Officials at Miami said Pont died at his home in Oxford, Ohio. Pont had been fighting cancer.

NHRA issues findings

The NHRA has released its preliminary findings from the investigation into the death of Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta, and says it will examine a variety of factors to increase safety.

Kalitta, 46, the son of drag racing pioneer and icon Connie Kalitta, died in a crash during qualifying at Englishtown, N.J., on June 21.

The NHRA identified several areas to analyze and determine whether changes should be made. They include: engine failure, parachute materials, brakes, shutdown area and speed.

“NASCAR team owner Chip Ganassi shut down Dario Franchitti’s race team because of a lack of sponsorship, putting the former IndyCar Series champion’s future in doubt.

Davis may head to L.A.

A day after Baron Davis shocked the Golden State Warriors by opting out of the final season of his contract to become a free agent, the big-game point guard is on the verge of signing a long-term deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, several sources reported.

“The Portland Trail Blazers have reached an agreement to sign Spanish guard Rudy Fernandez.

“A softball player accused of fatally punching a rival team member after a recreational league game spent more than four years in prison for battering a man with a golf club, according to state records.

Sean Sanders, 27, ran off the field after punching Daniel Andrews, 37, in the head at the end of the game Sunday afternoon in Parma, a Rochester, N.Y., suburb, and was captured a mile away some six hours later, according to authorities.

Andrews was taken unconscious to a hospital and placed on life support. He died Monday evening.
