TV’s best bets: ‘Last Comic’ dozen still standing

Mike Hughes Gannett News Service

Tonight’s must-see

“Last Comic Standing,” 8-10 p.m., NBC. By the end of tonight, we’ll have the show’s 12 finalists.

First, comedians perform for judges and a Las Vegas audience. Expect some laughs.

Tonight’s might-see

PBS’ “Soundstage,” 10 p.m., KSPS channel 7. In his hometown of Chicago, REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin seems pumped.

“Growing up, I lived for ‘Soundstage,’ ” he says. “It was the only show where you could see rock ‘n’ roll music live.”

The show began in Chicago in 1974, when others were still doing bad lip-synch. It died in 1985, but returned in 2002, catching music around the country.

Last week’s season-opener, with Josh Groban, was great. This one is … well, OK.

Speedwagon doesn’t add much on TV, but offers a solid line of hits. That includes two that reached No. 1, “Keep on Loving You” and “Can’t Fight the Feeling.”

Other choices include

“Million Dollar Password,” 8 p.m., CBS. CBS has added some extra Sunday episodes and is injecting some Thursday reruns. This one has Rosie O’Donnell and skateboarder Tony Hawk.

“Animal House” (1978), 8-10:15 p.m., AMC. The fine art of comedy chaos was worked perfectly here. John Belushi and others created the world’s shabbiest fraternity.

“Ugly Betty,” 8 p.m., ABC. Wilhelmina frets that her maid of honor (Victoria Beckham of the Spice Girls) will get the attention at her wedding.

“So You Think You Can Dance,” 9 p.m., Fox. There were no surprises last Thursday, when Chelsea Traile and Chris Jarosz were ousted. Tonight, the field is cut to 12.

“My Boys,” 9:30 p.m., TBS. In real life, Jim Gaffigan is a great comedian. Tonight, a co-worker (Nia Vardalos of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) nudges him to try stand-up.

“Hopkins,” 10 p.m., ABC. A young doctor is thinking about marrying; an older one has marital troubles and needs a place to stay.

“Swingtown,” 10 p.m., CBS. A porn-star fundraiser draws controversy.
