Reader Food Panel: Nilla Cakesters unimpressive

There’s nothing like the original.

Food panel tasters weren’t very impressed with the newfangled Oreo cakester cookies we tasted a few months ago, and they weren’t huge fans of its cousin, the Nilla Cakester either.

“I’m going to enter this product on Wikipedia as an example of bland,” said Andy Hoye.

Tasters gave the soft cream-filled cookies two and a half stars out of five for flavor.

“Bland, chalky and overly sweet,” Gabe Kohler said.

Jenny Whittaker thought the cookies were long on presentation, but short on flavor.

“These look like they are a delicate dessert to be served at a formal event, luncheon, buffet, etc. Deceptive. There’s not much flavor,” she said.

A few tasters liked the sandwich cookies, which were designed to taste like their namesake Nilla Wafers.

“It could be all the salty snacks we’ve had tonight, but the cakey cookies and sweet cream filling are pretty darn good,” Skip Hubbard said.

Marcia Oranen liked them, too. “Tastes just like wedding cake – I like it. A little crumbly, but I am a white cake person.”

Larry Inman said he’ll probably spend his junk-food dollars elsewhere. “OK. Just OK. Why would I buy this with so many other tasty desserts available?”

Comments: “From the comments I hear, I may be the only one in the room who likes these. Soft vanilla cake-like cookies that surround creamy vanilla icing.” – Tina Johnson

“Tastes like a Twinkie turned cookie. I’ll bet this could last 20 years, too.” – Peggy Kazanis

“Yum. Good idea, but no flavor. It needs more vanilla. There are better choices for your money and (it is just) empty calories.” – Nancy Robinson

“Tender but bland. I can only taste sugar, sugar and more sugar.” – Vicki Deschaine
