Spiders top division-leading Whitecaps

John Prugh staked the last-place Spokane Spiders to an early lead and goalkeeper Scott Barnum made 12 saves to lead the Spokane Spiders (3-10-2) to a 3-0 victory over the Northwest Division-leading Vancouver Whitecaps (10-3-1) in Premier Development League soccer play Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Prugh, with an assist from Scott Davidson, found the net 13 minutes into the game to put Spokane up 1-0. Davidson got an assist from Connor Baransky and scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 51-minute mark and Eddie Prugh, John’s brother, wrapped up the scoring in the 76th minute with his first goal of the year. Ty Perdido assisted on the final score.

Barnum highlighted his effort with a save on a penalty kick in the second half.

The Spiders close out the regular season on Saturday at 7 p.m. at SFCC against the Cascade Surge.

Baseball

Tyler Knigge and Pete Stedmeyer combined on a four-hitter and the Bend Elks (12-12) breezed to an 8-0 victory over the Spokane RiverHawks (11-13) in West Coast Collegiate Baseball League play at Avista Stadium.

Knigge allowed four hits, struck out four and walked two in his five innings of work. Stedmeyer threw four hitless innings, with one strikeout and three walks to pick up the save.

Matt Renner took the loss for the RiverHawks. He allowed five runs – two earned – on five hits in three innings.

Rodeo

Tiedown roper Kass Kayser of Ellensburg walked away with the most money in his wallet after the final day of the Cheney Rodeo. Kayser had a fast time of 9.4 seconds on the final day and earned $1,508.36 for his effort.

In bareback riding, Tyson Thompson of Merrill, Ore., scored an 81 on his final ride, but Ben Londo of Pendleton, Ore., was the overall winner, pocketing $1,203.84.

Jeb Knox of Prosser, Wash., and Sam MacKenzie of Jordan Valley, Ore., tied for the top spot in saddle bronc riding. Each earned $1,024.86.

Walla Walla’s B.J. Taruscio had the top time of 7.3 seconds in the final round of steer wrestling and with it he captured the overall title and pocketed $1,053.79.

Bob Moriarty of Moxee, Wash., and Jim Crouch of Bend, Ore., had a 19.0-second mark for the top time in team roping, but a pair of Montana cowboys, Cleve Fuller of Augusta and Ike Folsom of Dillon, won the overall title and earned $1,151.40.

Bull rider Daniel Dictson of Hondo, N.M., had the only qualifying effort in the final round – an 82 – and cashed out as the overall winner with $1,185.03.

Kelli Currin of Dayton, Wash., had the top final-round time in barrel racing at 16.66 seconds, just .02 faster than Jana Isaac of White Swan, Wash., but it wasn’t enough to beat out Barb West of Oak Harbor, Wash., for the overall title. West earned $1,143.13.
