Bells knock off RiverHawks

Sean Meehan’s solo home run in the sixth inning Tuesday snapped a 4-all tie and the Bellingham Bells defeated the Spokane RiverHawks 9-7 to open a three-game West Coast Collegiate Baseball League series at Gonzaga University’s Patterson Baseball Complex.

Kai Hatch finished 5 for 6 and Mike Chiarelli went 4 for 6 for the Bells (13-15). Chiarelli homered to lead off the second, doubled home a run in the third and added an RBI single in the eighth.

Logan Boyd, Mark Purser and Ernesto Ortiz were all 3 for 5 for the RiverHawks (12-15), who are 1-3 against the Bells this year. Aaron Headrick’s solo home run in the sixth for Spokane, his first of the season, cut the Bells’ lead to 6-5.

A.J. Proszek (1-2) took the loss, allowing nine hits and five earned runs in 51/3 innings.
