From wire reports

Yankees catcher Jorge Posada wants to put off surgery on his right shoulder even if it means sacrificing the start of next season. If he does play the rest of this year, it won’t be behind the plate.

On the disabled list for the second time this season, Posada had his throwing shoulder examined by New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek on Tuesday, and surgery was again recommended. An MRI showed fraying in the tendons around the labrum, but not a rotator cuff tear, Posada said Wednesday before the Yankees played the Minnesota Twins.

He missed more than a month earlier this season with right rotator cuff tendinitis.

“I’ve got 15 days to make a decision,” said Posada, who went on the DL Monday. “I’ll rehab it and see how it feels and have a decision by then.”

Wilpon admits error

Fred Wilpon and his organization endured a vicious beating from fans and the news media last month for the circumstances of Willie Randolph’s middle-of-the-night dismissal.

Wednesday, the Mets CEO had harsh words for himself: “I screwed up,” he said.

It wasn’t the firing itself he regretted, or how Randolph was treated.

In retrospect, though, he said he should have anticipated how the timing would look – and how it would go over with journalists.

Cards announce plan

With next year’s All-Star game fast approaching, the Cardinals announced a revised plan for Ballpark Village, a complex that will eventually replace the muddy eyesore left when the old Busch Stadium was torn down.

The project is expected to cost up to $600 million. Phase 1 will include a mix of office, entertainment and retail space on the eight-acre site. Phase 2 would add more, plus up to 250 residential units.

Clearing the bases

Former major leaguer Jay Gibbons is getting a second chance with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers have purchased Gibbons’ contract from the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks and will assign him to their Double-A affiliate in Huntsville, Ala. … The Chicago Cubs activated All-Star outfielder Alfonso Soriano from the DL.
