Phillies 8, Nationals 5: At Washington, Chase Utley homered for the second consecutive game, providing the big blow in a five-run fifth inning, and Philadelphia beat the Nationals to move back atop the East Division with its fourth straight win.

Marlins 7, Mets 5: At Miami, Josh Johnson pitched 6 2/3 innings for his first victory in almost two years and Florida beat New York. Mets starter Mike Pelfry lost for the first time in his past eight decisions.

Cardinals 7, Braves 2: At Atlanta, Chris Carpenter pitched four solid innings in his first start since April 2007 and St. Louis beat the Braves. Albert Pujols drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh for the Cardinals.

Rockies 7, Pirates 4: At Pittsburgh, Aaron Cook tied Arizona’s Brandon Webb for the league lead in victories (14), Troy Tulowitzki had three hits and Colorado topped the Pirates.

Cubs 7, Brewers 2: At Milwaukee, Ryan Dempster pitched seven superb innings, Ryan Theriot tripled to break open a close game and Chicago beat the Brewers for the third straight day.

Dodgers 4, Giants 0: At Los Angeles, Chad Billingsley pitched a five-hitter for his first career shutout and the Dodgers beat San Francisco to move to better than .500 for the first time since May 27.

Reds 9, Astros 5: At Houston, Adam Dunn homered twice, Ken Griffey Jr. hit a three-run shot and Cincinnati beat the Astros to snap an eight-game skid.

Diamondbacks 7, Padres 3: At San Diego, Dan Haren pitched seven solid innings, Chad Tracy and Mark Reynolds had two RBIs and Arizona beat the Padres.
