Street work poorly planned

The Spokesman-Review

Roads in Spokane are in dire need of repair. The need for proper traffic flow and the completion of road projects should be better thought out. Closing down the east-west arterials at the same time as closing down the north-south arterials has put an undue burden on the northwest side of town. Then to allow a telephone contractor to close down major lanes of Division is bad planning overall.

Two out of three major arterials leading to downtown are blocked by road construction, which has caused a major overload on the one remaining arterial west of Division and on an already crowded Division.

Francis is now a big traffic jam from Division to A Street. Closing Wellesley from Division to Monroe moved all of the traffic from NorthTown shopping center to a two-lane road, not made for that traffic, Queen Avenue. A four-way stop on Monroe and Queen caused numerous accidents and a backup of traffic during the rush-hour period on Monroe, which was the only real north-south arterial.

With gas prices at an all-time high, “stop and go” traffic is eating up the fuel economy of vehicles. It is putting a hardship on time and a hole in our pockets.
