In brief: Man crushed between car, wall

The Spokesman-Review

An elderly woman accidentally pinned her husband between her car and the garage wall Tuesday afternoon, killing him, police said.

The man, who has not been identified, was attempting to guide his wife into the garage when the accident occurred, said Spokane police Officer Jennifer DeRuwe.

Police responded to the couple’s home at 10000 block of North Moore Court just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, DeRuwe said. The air ambulance responded as well, but the elderly man died before being transported by medics.

“It looks like an accident that occurred while she was parking,” DeRuwe said.

Police raid nets 325 pot plants

More than 325 marijuana plants and a small amount of methamphetamine were found Monday when the Bonner County Sheriff’s Department raided 577 Williams Dr., in Priest Lake, authorities said.

Deputies arrested three people at the home, said Sheriff Elaine Savage. Andrew C. Conev, 24, and Rickey C. Williams, 40, were charged with trafficking marijuana. Conev’s bail was set at $100,000 while Williams has a $20,000 bail. Caroline Koch, 53, was charged with manufacturing a controlled substance. She was released on bail, jail officials said.

Officials had been investigating a possible grow operation at that address, Savage said.

Murder suspect posts second bail

A former online prostitute accused in the shooting death of her estranged husband posted $25,000 to get out of jail last week.

It’s the second, nonrefundable $25,000 bond Shellye Lynn Stark has posted since her arrest in early December for allegedly killing Dale Robert Stark, her husband of more than 20 years.

The 46-year-old, once known in the online prostitution community as Nikita Jennifer, spent several weeks in the Spokane County Jail before posting bail in January, but she returned May 23 after her bail bond company determined through a GPS tracking device that she’d left the area, a violation of her release conditions, according to court papers.

Stark again posted bail June 6. Her first-degree murder trial is set to begin in September.

Teens arrested in fire at mall

Police have arrested two teenage boys in connection with a fire that destroyed the Delft Square mall in the northwest Washington town of Lynden.

Police Chief Jack Foster said the boys, aged 13 and 14, were arrested Tuesday and booked into the Whatcom County Juvenile Detention Center for investigation of first-degree reckless burning, second-degree burglary and trespassing.

No one was injured in Monday’s fire in a historic block-long building that once housed a Lynden department store. Windows were blown out and the roof collapsed.

Foster said witnesses reported seeing one of the teens in the area with a fire extinguisher as the blaze spread. Police contacted school administrators, who led them to the boys. One boy is a Lynden Middle School student and the other is a former student.

The police chief declined to discuss exactly how the fire started.

New baby beluga at B.C. aquarium

Vancouver, B.C.’s aquarium is home to a newborn baby beluga.

Twelve-year-old Qila, the first beluga whale to be conceived and born in a Canadian aquarium, gave birth to her calf Tuesday afternoon.

Aquarium staff say the newborn beluga is about five feet long.

They’re keeping a round-the-clock eye on mom and the calf to watch for bonding and nursing behavior.

Two other belugas, including the calf’s father, were moved to another pool to give Qila more room during the birth.

Qila and the new calf can be seen via live webcam at www.vanaqua.org.
