UW raising tuition 7 percent

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

SEATTLE – University of Washington regents have approved a 7 percent tuition hike for in-state undergraduate students.

Next year, tuition and fees will increase by $408 to a total of $6,793. The 7 percent increase is the maximum allowed in one year under state law.

In a statement Thursday, the university said the increase will yield about $8.4 million annually, and that money will be used to pay for increases in education costs.

UW President Mark Emmert says tuition is still low compared to similar public institutions, and more money will be allocated for financial aid.

Tuition for nonresident undergraduates will increase by 6.6 percent, while graduate and professional programs students will see a 6.1 percent to 9.4 percent increase.
