While school is ending for the summer for most local students, area churches are gearing up for annual Vacation Bible School classes:

Manito Presbyterian Church, 401 E. 30th Ave., will present “Power Lab,” June 23 through 27 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Students entering pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade are invited for music, prayer, Bible crafts and more.

Central Lutheran Church, 512 S. Bernard St., will present “Rainforest Adventure,” also June 23 through 27.

Children ages 3 through middle school are invited to attend. The cost is $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.

Lectures and classes

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will present “Ordinary Mind is the Way,” a lecture by Socho Koshin Ogui, bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America in Berkeley, Calif., today at 7 p.m.

Ogui will speak about using your knowledge and speculations to gain insight in how to live.

“Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 3307 W. Rowan Ave., is offering classes to discuss why there are so many Christian denominations, as well as beliefs they hold in common. The classes are held every Thursday evening.

The church also offers classes every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the Book of Acts and the early history of the Christian Church.

Dads and cars

Spokane Valley United Methodist Church, 115 N. Raymond Road, will host a Father’s Day Car Show on Sunday from 10 to 11, following the 9 a.m. worship service. All are welcome to attend.

Church concert

Audubon Park United Methodist Church, 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd., will present Chris Driesbach, a musician from New Orleans, Sunday at 7 p.m.

Driesbach will perform original Christian music which will reflect his church, his Christian experience and the impact Hurricane Katrina had on New Orleans.

Spiritual cinema

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present the movie “2012, The Odyssey” on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The movie will discuss the Mayan Calendar and how it ends on Dec. 21, 2012.

Special service

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present a Celtic Eucharist on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The service will observe the summer solstice and feature readings and prayers from Celtic Christian sources.

A bonfire will follow the service and attendees are invited to bring a beverage or snack to share.

Volunteers needed

The Childbirth and Parenting Alone program through Catholic Charities is looking for volunteer mentors to young, single pregnant women through the program’s Doula Project. The project supports the single parent through the prenatal, birthing and early parenting experiences.

The mentors must make a one-year commitment to spend two hours a week with a young mother.

The mentors must also be at least 26 years old, have a high school education or general equivalency and be a parent themselves.
