The Spokane Astronomical Society will host its annual Astronomy Day at the Shadle Library on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., said Jerry Eber, a member of the society.

The event will include indoor and outdoor activities and is designed to help children learn about astronomy.

Downtown

Workshop teaches street tree care

A workshop on the care and maintenance of street trees is being offered to downtown property owners on Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Kress Gallery on the third floor of Riverpark Square.

The workshop is in conjunction with a grant program to make new street trees available to downtown property owners. Information will include irrigation, ongoing maintenance, suitable tree types and taking advantage of the grant program, which seeks to add 50 trees a year downtown.

Hillyard

ChalkArtWalk to be Saturday

The 11th annual Hillyard ChalkArtWalk will be Saturday. Registration is free and begins at 10 a.m. in the parking lot on the corner of Market Street and Queen Avenue. This year’s theme is, “Earth, Wind, Rain and Fire.” The event is for artists of all ages and ability.

A small assortment of colored chalk will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own chalk and fixative; surface preparation and oil pastels will be allowed. Handmade chalks of brighter colors will be available for a minimal cost.

Free T-shirts featuring the 2007 “Best in Show” will be given to the first 100 artists. The “Best in Show” winner will receive $100 and a framed picture of their winning entry. The entry will be featured on next year’s T-shirt.

Mayor proclaims Youth Day

The mayor has given her seal of approval and proclamation, making Saturday Youth Declare Yourself Day.

Held at Riverfront Park from 3 to 6 p.m., PONY TALES (Positive Outreach Navigating Youth Teaching Adolescents Leadership and Entrepreneurial Spirit) Youth Services and Crickett Wireless will recognize the importance of the voice and talent of Spokane’s local youths.

West Central

Free basketball program at center

The West Central Community Center will hold a free baseball skills-development program, beginning July 1, from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m. at Cannon Park. The program will run through Aug. 20 and is for ages 8 to 12.

The program will emphasize sportsmanship and teach the basic fundamentals of baseball, while promoting the game.
