In brief: Poet laureate to speak at EWU

Sam Green, the first poet laureate of the state of Washington will speak at the JFK Library at Eastern Washington University at 4:30 p.m. today.

Green’s talk, “Poetry in the Every Day,” will be his first public speech on the east side of the state since being named state poet laureate in December 2007 by Gov. Chris Gregoire. His book, “Vertebrae: Poems 1972-1996,” was published by EWU Press.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to support the EWU Friends of the Library, which is sponsoring the talk. A reception will follow the presentation.

Tour steps into history of EWU

The annual Walking Tour of Eastern Washington University’s campus will be Monday at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the EWU Friends of the Library.

The 90-minute tour will begin with a slide show in the second-floor lounge of Monroe Hall. Charles Mutschler, the university’s archivist, will conduct the tour, providing narration as attendees walk through the EWU Historic District. He will discuss the buildings and the people for whom they are named, the architecture and colorful stories of the university’s past.

A reception will end the tour with refreshments.

EWU chooses new dean of students

Al Thompson was recently named the new associate vice president of student affairs and dean of students at Eastern Washington University.

Thompson is currently the assistant to the chancellor for affirmative action and diversity at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Thompson will begin his new role on Aug. 1, taking over for Bob Hille who has served as the interim dean during the past year.
