East wins 2 of 3 in All-State games

The East won two of three Washington All-State girls basketball games versus the West on Saturday at West Valley High School.

Game most valuable player Melissa Meza of Lake Roosevelt scored 20 and Freeman’s Megan McIntyre added 13 points to lead the 1A East to an 85-77 victory.

McIntyre’s Scotties teammate Carley Heinen scored six points.

The West’s Tiffany Tornow of Toledo led all scorers with 21.

B game MVP Madison Hahn of Riverside Christian and La Salle’s Jasmine Stohr each tossed in 14 points and the East routed the West 89-41.

LaCrosse-Washtucna’s Karla Koller scored nine points for the East.

In the 2A/3A game, Stephanie Hicks of North Mason scored 11 and MVP Alyssa Smith of Archbishop Murphy added nine points as the West rolled to a 62-38 victory.

West Valley’s Shaniqua Nilles finished with 11 points to pace the East squad.

Baseball

Shane Carlson drove in three runs to lead the Bend Elks (4-4) to a 10-8 victory over the Spokane RiverHawks (3-5) in the first game of a West Coast Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader in Bend, Ore.

Dustin Willis took the loss for Spokane. He lasted just 11/3 innings and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits.

Greg Lagied went 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs for Spokane.

Football

Reardan’s Tyler Moos recovered an errant snap in the end zone on a punt attempt with 3 minutes, 34 seconds remaining to help the East earn a 17-6 victory over the West in the 2A/1A/B East-West All-Star game in Yakima.

Lucas Fox of Kettle Falls gave the East a 10-6 lead in the second quarter when he hauled in a 16-yard pass for a touchdown. Lucas also had one carry for 5 yards.

Golf

Former Ritzville High School and University of Idaho standout Ryan Benzel is in a six-way tie for 16th place after the third round of the PGA Professional National Championship at Reynolds Plantation in Lake Oconee, Ga.

Benzel, who plays out of Mill Creek (Wash.) Country Club, shot a 1-under-par 71 and sits at 2-under 214 heading into today’s final round.

Kyle Flinton, Sonny Skinner and Scott Hebert share the lead at 8-under 208.

Kyle Kelly, a North Central High graduate who plays out of Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., is tied for 49th after a third-round 73 left him at 3-over 219.

The top 20 finishers earn spots in the PGA Championship in August. The winner will earn $75,000 and receive an exemption into the next five PGA Professional National Championships and a spot on the 2009 PGA Cup Team.

Soccer

The Yakima Reds (6-3-1) handed the Spokane Spiders (2-9-1) their fifth Premier Development League loss in a row with a 5-1 romp at Marquette Stadium in Yakima.

On Friday, the Spiders fell 3-1 to the Tacoma Tide in Tacoma.
