LC’s Haase, Thomas qualify for Jr. Amateurs

Seven golfers – one boy and six girls – qualified for national USGA tournaments on Monday at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Justin Haase, who will be a junior at Lewis and Clark this fall, shot a two-round total of 138 (69-69) on the par-71 course to earn the only spot available for the USGA Junior Amateur Championship, which is set to be played at Shoal Creek in Shoal, Alabama from July 21-26.

A total of 29 boys competed for the spot, including locals Hank Frame, Tanner Robb, Brady Dixon, Matt Monttecucco, Garrett Howard, Robert Seibly, Peter Gullickson, Stephen Thoen, Connor Brutocao, Dylan Maine and Alex Pounds.

Chessey Thomas, last year’s Greater Spokane League player of the year who will also be a junior at Lewis and Clark this fall, shot one-over-par 73 in the girls’ single-round qualifier.

Thomas and five others qualified for the USGA Girls Junior Championship, which will be played at the Hartford Golf Club in Hartford, Conn., from July 21-26.

Other girls that qualified included: Seo Hee Moon (Mukilteo, Wash.), Jessica Wallace (Canada), Katrina Hegge (Seattle), Cheyenne Hickle (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Rui Li (Seattle). Moon and Wallace tied Thomas for low round at 73.

A total of 30 girls competed in the tournament – including locals Megan Haase, Elaine Whaley and Jenna Speltz.

Staub wins triple crown

Hudson Staub, 12 of Dalton Gardens won titles in Greco Roman and Freestyle and placed second in Folkstyle at the USA Wrestling 2008 Western Kids Regional Championships held June 15-21 at Holt Arena in Pocatello, ID.

Staub, who will be a seventh grader at Kentfield Middle School in Coeur d’Alene this fall, wrestled 19 matches in the three styles of wrestling over the six-day tournament. Placing highest overall in three styles earned him the Western U.S. Triple Crown Award in the Novice 95-pound class.

His older brother Ken Staub, 15, a sophomore at Coeur d’Alene High School this fall, placed fourth in the Greco Roman Cadet 119-pound class. Jake Graham, 15, also of Coeur d’Alene High, placed sixth in the Folkstyle Cadet 135-pound class.

The tournament invited the top state placers from 11 western states. Hudson Staub has won all three styles in the USA Wrestling Idaho state championships the past two years.

Local wrestlers head to national event

Five local wrestlers were selected for the Washington State Wrestling Association’s 2008 Schoolboy Dual Team that competed in the national schoolboy dual tournament in Indianapolis from June 18-22.

The tournament pitted state teams against each other in dual matches of either Greco Roman or freestyle disciplines. The Washington state team took ninth nationally in Greco Roman and sixth in freestyle.

A total of 22 Washington wrestlers were selected to compete in 17 weight classes, including Jordan Rogers, 14, a freshman at Mead this fall who went undefeated competing at both 124 and 152 pounds in both disciplines.

Other local competitors included Colton Orrino, 13, from Spokane Valley at 84 pounds; Dylan Miller, 14, from Deer Park at 136 and 144 pounds; Jason Jorgenson, 14, from Deer Park at 128 pounds, and Kit Major, 13, from Riverside at 120 pounds.

Pacheco hits for cycle

Medical Lake’s Nick Pacheco hit for the cycle last Tuesday during a 13-5 Junior American Legion win in the second game of a doubleheader at Pullman.

Pacheco finished 4 for 4 with four runs scored. The home run – a solo shot – was his first of the year.
