Jungmark wins gold for Cougs

Washington State Cougars freshman Ebba Jungmark earned a gold medal at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.

Freshman Ebba Jungmark cleared an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 6 feet, 3/4 inches to win the women’s high jump.

The Cougars men’s 4x400 relay team – Barry Leavitt, Reny Follett, Jeshua Anderson and Justin Woods – broke a 27-year-old school record with a time of 3:08.86. They finished third with the NCAA provisional qualifying effort.

Oregon won the men’s team title with 90 points. WSU scored 58 and tied Arizona for seventh.

Arizona State won the women’s team title with 154.5 points. WSU (49) placed seventh.

•University of Idaho’s Lucas Pope and Heather Bergland won gold medals at the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships in Boise.

Pope cleared 16-43/4 to win the men’s pole vault, while Bergland clocked an 8.53 to win the women’s 60-meter hurdles.

Louisiana Tech nipped Hawaii 122-121 to win the women’s team title. Idaho (86) was third.

Utah State beat runner-up Boise State 179-154 to take the men’s team title. Idaho (118) was third.

Four Vandals finished second: Cesar Barquero (men’s 800, 1:54.34); Matthew Wauters (men’s weight throw, 69-3/4); Paul Dittmer (men’s 60 hurdles, 8.12); Allix Lee-Painter (women’s mile, 5:01.54).

•Shannon Long had the best showing for the Eastern Washington Eagles at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Pocatello, Idaho.

Long finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.01 seconds.

Sacramento State won both the men’s and women’s titles. The Eagles men tallied 21 points to place seventh, while the women scored 34 to finish eighth.

EWU’s Nicole Luckenbach was fifth in the weight throw with a career-best toss of 55-73/4. Teammate Mattie Bridgmon was fifth in the women’s 3,000 – a day after winning the 5,000 – with a time of 10:03.39.

Curtis Suver topped the EWU men with a fifth-place finish in the 3,000 in 8:28.24. Teammate Adam Stewart cleared 6-63/4 to place fifth in the men’s high jump.
