M’s, ace discuss future

From Wire Reports The Spokesman-Review

Any questions about the long-term future of Felix Hernandez with the Seattle Mariners could be answered soon.

The team has proposed a multiyear contract for the pitcher, according to mlb.com, and Hernandez’s agent is expected in Peoria, Ariz., today to talk with the club.

In the meantime, Hernandez, 21, signed a one-year contract for 2008 on Saturday, the day he made his spring training debut and pitched two scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres.

The Mariners don’t discuss personnel matters, but Hernandez’s agent, Wil Polidor, told mlb.com that the team had approached him about a long-term deal.

“We have been concentrating on a contract for 2008,” Polidor told mlb.com, “but (the Mariners) said they want to talk about a long-term deal.”

Rookie outfielder Chase Headley had a two-run homer and a two-run double while leading San Diego to an 11-10 win over Seattle at Peoria.

Seattle’s Mike Morse went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, giving him six RBIs in three spring games.
