Golf: Gonzaga places 8th

Gonzaga’s Derek Cheney helped the Bulldogs finish eighth at the Braveheart Classic men’s tournament that concluded Tuesday in Beaumont, Calif.

Cheney shot a three-round 12-over-par 228 at the Oak Valley Golf Course and tied for 11th place. Teammate Brandon Crick tied for 17th with a 230.

Gonzaga totaled 927, 27 strokes behind winner Cal Poly.

“The Idaho Vandals women placed 14th and Gonzaga was last in the 15-team San Jose State Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif.

Beth Stonecypher topped Idaho with a 25-over-par 241, while Rachel Sibbitt carded a 242 to pace Gonzaga.

Cal beat San Jose State by five strokes to win the team title.

“Coeur d’Alene’s Tyler Johnson and Kyler Gable finished second and third to lead the Vikings to the 4A team title at the Pasco Invitational at Sun Willows Golf Course.

Ferris’ Garrett Howard shot a 3-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors.

Johnson (72) and Gable (73) helped CdA finish eight shots in front of runner-up Walla Walla.
