If your idea of self-medication means soothing your ills with chocolate, surely you’ve found the Chocolate Apothecary.
The Spokane chocolate cafe opened in 2005 after owner Susan Davis was inspired by the therapeutic effects of chocolate after she took a particularly grueling organic chemistry test. (At the time, she was a pharmacy student.) Now, she’s passing the prescription to other cities.
The Chocolate Apothecary recently awarded its first franchise in Dallas. It is scheduled to open in May.
Davis said in a news release she’s received inquiries from several countries, but decided to offer franchises in the U.S. first.
The store offers drinking chocolates, dark and milk chocolates infused with other ingredients and chocolate-themed gifts. It is in the Flour Mill, 621 W. Mallon Ave., or on the Web at www.chocolateapothecary.com.
Healthy Nacho Recipe Contest opens
Does everyone ask for your nacho recipe?
Come up with the tastiest original healthy nacho recipe and it could be featured on the menu at the Downriver Grill in time for Cinco de Mayo.
Entries in the sixth-annual Inland Northwest Healthy Nacho Recipe Contest will be accepted now through April 11. To be eligible, the recipe must include two types of cow’s milk cheeses and at least one calorie-cutting ingredient. Finalists whip up their creations at a cook-off April 19 at the Downriver Grill, where judges will pick a winner.
The judges include Downriver Grill owner and chef Jonathan Sweatt, Saunders Cheese Market owner Kim Morin, and Spokane registered dietitian Michelle Weinbender.
The winner will have his or her recipe featured on the menu at the Downriver Grill and receive a $500 gift certificate to the restaurant. Second place is a $250 certificate to Saunders Cheese Market and third prize is a $100 gift certificate to Downriver Grill.
Entry forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Downriver Grill, 3315 W. Northwest Boulevard, or Saunders Cheese Market, 210 S. Washington St. For the hours, go to www.thedownrivergrill.com or www.saunderscheesemarket.com. If you’re looking for the contest rules or past winning recipes, go to www.thinkyoursnacks.org.
